5 Reasons Miniature Herefords are a Great Addition to Your Farm

It started with a trip to an exotic livestock auction, as many good stories do.

My mother and I have enjoyed many trips to Jim Scott’s Alternative Livestock Auction over the years. Dad and Colt never knew what we might come home with. We’ve brought home angora goats – what’s a few more goats, but with better hair? And a few alpacas – that we promptly sold on the next trip. We’ve discussed the need for a camel – they eat thistles! Considered breeding hedgehogs – those things sell high! But by far my favorite purchase has been the Miniature Herefords.

I’ve always loved Hereford cattle, and I have an obsession with anything with short legs, so Miniature Herefords were a no-brainer for me. If you’re wondering if you should add a few minis to your farm or homestead, or need a few good talking points to convince your significant other, here are 5 reasons Miniature Herefords are a great addition to your farm.

  1. They are easy to manage. Hereford cattle are known for their docility. They have a calm temperament and are easy to handle, making them a great option for farmers and ranchers who are new to cattle-raising or who prefer a low-stress environment for their animals. Additionally, their docile nature makes them easier to train and work with, which can lead to improved productivity and profitability in the long run.
  2. Lower input costs means more potential profit. One of the biggest advantages of raising Miniature Herefords is their smaller size. Compared to their full-sized counterparts, mini Herefords require less pasture, hay, feed, water and other resources. This translates to lower input costs and a more efficient use of your resources. This also makes them a great option for smaller farms and ranches.
  3. They provide high meat quality. While smaller in size, their meat is anything but small in quality. In fact, many farmers and ranchers report that Miniature Hereford beef is more tender and flavorful than traditional Hereford beef. Additionally, they produce a good amount of beef for a family, not overtaking every inch of freezer space.
  4. Versatility is key. Miniature Hereford cattle are versatile animals that can be raised for a variety of purposes. Some farmers choose to raise them for meat, while others raise them for breeding stock or as pets. They’ve also become popular in the show cattle world. I’ve used ours for educational and entertainment purposes through school visits, TV appearances and birthday parties. Whatever your goals may be, Miniature Herefords can be a valuable addition to your operation.
  5. Have you seen them? Adorable! Let’s face it – Miniature Hereford cattle are just plain cute. They have a distinctive look with their red and white markings, their fluffy coats and their short legs. If you’re looking for a unique and eye-catching addition to your farm, Miniature Herefords are sure to fit the bill.

Raising Miniature Hereford cattle can be a smart and profitable decision for farmers and ranchers. In addition to their cuteness, their versatility, manageability, lower input costs and high meat quality make them a valuable addition to your operation.
