Meet the Herd: Walter
Name: Walter
Species: Bovine
Gender: Bull
Breed: Registered Miniature Hereford
Walter wants you to know he’s kind of a big deal. People know him.
When I decided to swap my mini cow herd from commercial cattle to registered, Walter was my first purchase. I was so excited to find a bull fairly close to home – he was in south Missouri. I was also pumped that they had started working with him on a halter. Y’all know I tend to treat everything like a pet, so if I could lead him around – even better! Little did I know how handy that would be…
When trying to think of a good name for him, I looked at other names on his registration papers. His sire’s name (his dad) was Wally. That made me think of Jeff Dunham’s puppet Walter. And since even at only 8 months old, he already looked like a grumpy old man, Walter was the perfect name for him.
Walter has been such a trooper. When I was still working as a 4-H agent conducting school programs, I toted Walter all over the counties so kids could meet him. He’s so chill, at one program he laid down and let several Pre-K kids gather around him to take a photo.
He’s also been the hit of a few birthday parties!
But one of his coolest claims to fame was his visit to our local news station! Arkansas Farm Bureau has been doing agriculture segments on Today’s THV’s The Vine, and they wanted to do a segment on beef cattle production in Arkansas. I got a text asking if Walter wanted to be on TV – the answer was OF COURSE!
We loaded Walter up and took him downtown Little Rock. As we are leading him across the street to enter the weather garden, some dude was walking and talking on his phone and we heard him say, “Holy $h!t! There’s a cow!”
Walter did amazing on TV. He didn’t even poop or pee on camera – cause he’s professional like that.
