Apple, a jersey dairy cow that produces raw milk on a central Arkansas farm.

Of all the crazy ideas I’ve had, Apple may be one of the craziest and best!

In September 2023, I decided we needed a milk cow for our family. We were already milking 4 goats, so I thought, “How much more work could a cow be?”

Apple, a jersey dairy cow, makes friends with a little cowgirl.
Josey quickly claimed Apple as her cow. In fact, “Apple” was one of her first words.

We were going to hand milk her. That lasted all of two days! We quickly ordered teat cups that would fit her and also attach to our goat milker. Shortly after, my parents surprised me with a cow milking machine. Now, I can milk Apple out in less than 5 minutes!

Apple is a Jersey cow. Jersey cows are high producing dairy cows, known for the high butterfat content in their milk. Apple produces 3-5 gallons a day, depending on where she is in her lactation cycle. Jerseys are also a very docile breed.

Josey entered Apple in our local county fair – and sat on her in the ring!

Apple gave birth to “Peaches,” a heifer calf, in May of 2024. Peaches is living her best life on the farm! This year, our daughter entered both Apple and Peaches in our local county fair. They all three loved the spotlight!
